The North Atlantic Population Project (NAPP) harmonizes and disseminates nineteenth and early twentieth century census microdata. The collection includes data from Canada, Denmark, Great Britain, Germany, Iceland, Norway, Sweden, and the United States for the period 1703 to 1911.

Use it for GOOD -- never for EVIL

Starting in January 2020, data dissemination for the North Atlantic Population Project (NAPP) will occur solely through IPUMS-International. This site will persist, but it will direct users to IPUMS International to obtain data. All data in the NAPP database are currently available from IPUMS International. The NAPP data files are grouped within the browsing system for easy selection.

New data users: Data users who have not previously registered with NAPP should apply for data access through IPUMS-International.

Existing NAPP users: NAPP users should complete all data extracts they require from the old system by December 31, 2019, after which time the data will be available from IPUMS-International only. Some NAPP variables are available from IPUMS-International by different names, and recoding was required in some cases. More information on changes to variables is available here. All data users will be required to apply for data access through IPUMS-International.
