NFAMS
Number of families in household

Codes

This is a 4-digit numeric variable.

Description

NFAMS is a constructed variable that counts the number of families within each dwelling unit. A "family" is any group of persons related by blood, adoption, or marriage. An unrelated individual is considered a separate family. Thus, a household consisting of a widow and her servant contains two families; a household consisting of a large, multiple-generation extended family with no boarders, lodgers, or servants counts as a single family.

Comparability

For persons in households that are not group quarters, NFAMS indicates the number of families in the household. For persons in group quarters, NFAMS indicates the number of families in any sampled unit. See GQ and "Family Interrelationships."

No constructed family interrelationship variables are available for Canadian censuses of 1852, 1871, and 1881, and the Mecklenburg-Schwerin census of 1819, which contain no information on relationship to household head.

Scotland 1861 has a high proportion of missing values for RELATE (relationship to head of household variable). As a result, there may be inaccuracies in NFAMS and other constructed household and family interrelationship variables for dwellings containing records with missing values for RELATE.
