NAPPSTER recodes BPLCNTRY into a variable that identifies the country of birth if the respondent was born in a NAPP country. The variable recodes all other places of birth to code 98 if the person was born in another country, and to code 99 if the birthplace is unknown.

Detailed birthplaces are coded in variables BPLPROCA, BPLDSTCA, BPLCTYGB, BPLIS, BPLNO, BPLSE, BPLPARSE and BPLUS.

NAPPSTER is mostly comparable across all countries in the NAPP database. However there are several levels of detail noted. Instructions to British enumerators required them to record the country "as specifically as possible". Those born within Great Britain were to specify England, Wales, or Scotland. Those born within Germany were to specify the particular state. The detail of responses varied, and did not always agree with contemporary political boundaries. For example, most people born in Canada simply replied "Canada", but many responded with a specific Canadian province (New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, Ontario, Quebec, etc.).

For the Canadian censuses, enumerators were required to collect information on the foreign country of birth, or the province if the person was born in Canada. The detail of responses varied; users who wish to examine more detailed responses by some respondents, such as Canadian cities or towns, should consult the variable BPLCA.

The codes for NAPPSTER do not distinguish between the constituent countries of the United Kingdom. A birthplace reported as "Ireland" or "Northern Ireland" are assigned a code of 98, meaning born in a non-NAPP country. For detailed information on the Irish born, refer to variable BPLCNTRYand BPLCTYGB. The original coded country of birth variable for Scotland 1881 does not identify persons born in other NAPP countries. These countries are identified in the alphabetic source variable GB1881B_0433.

NAPPSTER is not available for the Mecklenburg 1819 census, due to unavailability of foreign birthplaces.
