Description

IND1950 recodes information about industry into the 1950 Census Bureau industrial classification system and thus enhances comparability of industry data across all years included in the IPUMS. IND1950 was designed the same way as OCC50US (Occupation, 1950 basis), the procedure for which is discussed in detail in "Integrated Occupation and Industry Codes and Occupational Standing Variables in the IPUMS." The composition of the industry categories is described in detail in U.S. Bureau of the Census, Alphabetic Index of Occupations and Industries: 1950 (Washington, D.C., 1950).

The term "labor force" and other key employment concepts are defined in the documentation for LABFORCE.

In the 1850-1910 United States and 1891 Canada samples, the universe for IND1950 relied on persons having an occupation recorded in OCC50US.

Comparability

This variable is only available for the United States datasets and the 1891 and 1911 censuses of Canada.

In Canada 1891, persons also reported a secondary industry, if they had one. Only the primary industry response is coded into IND1950. Users should refer to CA91A453 to identify the respondent's secondary industry.

In Canada 1891, users should take note that the majority of persons with "no industry reported" in IND1950 were classified as "laborers" in OCC50US.
