Description
REGIONNA identifies the household's census region and division in Canada and the United States. It adds second digit codes to the Northeast, Midwest and West regions to accommodate the contiguous Canadian provinces.
Comparability
Ontario is classified in the Northeast region, though parts of the province are contiguous with the Midwest region.
REGIONNA is identical to the IPUMS-USA variable REGION, except for the addition of Canadian codes. Users who only select United States data will not see the Canadian codes.
Users should note that Alaska and Hawaii were not part of the United States at this date, and that Oklahoma was part of Indian Territory (which was not included in the LDS transcription of the 1880 Census).
