Description
REEL reports the microfilm reel number. For each sample, REEL can be used in conjunction with PAGENUM to locate the case on a microfilmed version of the original census form.
Comparability
The numbering of the microfilm reels was assigned by the National Archives of Canada and the United States in their respective countries. Any overlap in values is coincidental.
REEL is mostly compatible with the IPUMS-USA variable REEL. Note that the NAPP version of REEL is 6 columns wide to accommodate reel numbers for the 1881 Canadian census, while REEL in IPUMS-USA is 4 columns wide.
