Description
POPLOC is a constructed variable that indicates whether the person's father lived in the same household and, if so, gives the person number of the father (see PERNUM).
POPLOC makes it easy for researchers to link the characteristics of children and their (probable) fathers.
The method by which probable child-father links are identified is described in POPRULE.
User Caution: POPLOC identifies social relationships (such as stepfather and adopted father) as well as biological relationships.
Comparability
This variable is comparable for all countries, but see the Family Interrelationships page for discussion of these NAPP constructed variables.
Each sample contains a corresponding variable, MOMLOC, that identifies mothers.
Family interrelationship variables were not constructed in households containing 30 or more residents. In addition, pointers were not constructed for households containing individuals with the relationship "spouse of head" unless the household could be subdivided into multiple sub-households each with a person identified as a household or family head. These limitations were necessary because of the uncertainty of family interrelationships in these households and members of affected households receive a POPLOC code of 0.
United States
POPLOC is not available for 1850-1870, but the IPUMS variable IMPPOP produces similar results. As a convenience, the extract system is set up so that users may include POPLOC in extracts of the 1850-1870 samples. In those years, POPLOC contains the information that is documented in the IMPPOP variable description.
Canada
No constructed family interrelationship variables are available for 1852, 1871 and 1881 Canadian censuses, as Canada did not enumerate relationship to household head in these years. However, the family interrelationship information can be deduced from RELHEAD in 1891 and 1901. Future releases of NAPP will include imputed versions of these variables, similar to the IMPMOM, IMPPOP, and IMPSP in IPUMS-USA.
Mecklenburg-Schwerin
No constructed family interrelationship variables are available for the Mecklenburg-Schwerin census of 1819, which contains no information on relationship to household head.
Norway
Sample-specific rules were implemented for the Norwegian censuses to address differences in the coding of RELATE (relationship to the head of household) and other enumeration practices.
