Description

MIGRANT gives the migration status of every individual for whom birthplace information is available. MIGRANT is a recode of both the various country specific birthplace variables (BPLCA, BPLNO, BPLSE, BPLCTYGB, BPLCNTRY) and NAPPSTER.

All the NAPP censuses included in this variable asked respondents for at least their province, county or state of birth if native-born, or their country of birth if foreign-born.

Comparability

In Norway and Britain, native-born respondents were asked to provide their municipality (BPLNO) or parish (BPLCTYGB) of birth.

Users should note that the codes for birthplace and current residence (MUNICNO) are the same in Norway, and can be used to create a Norway only variable that identifies people living in their municipality of birth.

Users of the British data may attempt to combine the information in GB81A425, GB81B424 GB51A420 (an alphabetic variable) with the codes and labels for current parish of residence (PARISHGB) to identify people living in their parish of birth.

Note that for Great Britain, migrant status is recorded as unclassifiable if the birthplace is unknown or if the county of birth (BPLCTYGB) is recorded as "at sea".

Migrant is not available for the Mecklenburg-Schwerin 1819 census due to unavailability of foreign birthplaces. Mecklenburg also does not report "district" of birth, but specific birthplace strings.
