Description

DISABIL indicates permanent disability, for example, whether a person was blind, deaf/dumb, mentally ill, or has epilepsy.

For the individual disability variables, refer to BLIND, DEAF, IDIOTIC, and INSANE. Information on sickness and temporary disability on census day can be found in SICKNESS.

Comparability

DISABIL is available for United States 1880, Canada 1891, Norway, Sweden, and Iceland.

The United States 1880 disability is coded from several responses such that people with two or more disabilities get their own category (category 8). The category 'Other' for United States 1880 includes maimed people.

The "retarded or insane" (category 5) for Norway combine insane, the melancholy, idiots, silly, retarded and suchlike patients.

Sweden 1900 reports epilepsy, which is not found in the other countries.

Iceland 1901 reports leprosy, which is not found in the other countries.

Canada 1891 reports "Unsound mind", which is coded 'Insane'.
