Description
DEAF identifies persons who were both "deaf and dumb", the contemporary terminology for persons with severe hearing or speech disabilities. More on the disability status of an individual can be found in the DISABIL variable.
Comparability
DEAF is available for Iceland, Norway, Sweden, Canada, and the United States.
Canada: This variable is not present in the 1881 Canada sample. The 1891 sample differentiates between respondents who are deaf and dumb, and those who are only deaf. This distinction is not present in the 1852 sample.
This variable is not present in the 1801 or 1881 Iceland samples.
In the 1850-1870 United States samples, persons who were only deaf or only dumb were identified as well. In the 1880 and 1910 samples, such persons were not identified separately. For the 1901 United States sample, no question on deafness was included in the questionnaire used in Alaska. However, the "Unknown" category includes respondents from Alaska as well.
