Description

CHSURV reports the number of children ever born, to each ever-married woman, who were still living on census day (see also CHBORN). This includes all children born to a woman by all fathers, regardless of the child's current place of residence. Women were not to count adopted children or step-children. 

Comparability

This variable is only available for the United States and Iceland 1901.

For Iceland 1901, this question is asked of both men and women who were ever-married. Code '0' includes both persons who had no children alive and persons who did not have any child.
